Effect of Massage in Labor on Length of Delivery and Labor pain in Nulliparous Women

Introduction: Length of Delivery and Labor pain, are things that can affect delivery on maternal and neonatal outcomes. Doctors and researchers believe that reducing the duration and severity of labor pain have resorted to methods that are safe and secure at the same time and do not create complications for mother and fetus. Since the use of non-pharmacological methods of fetal and maternal complications have been observed, Massage is the one of non-pharmacological methods. Different studies have emphasized the effects of the Massage on Labor and delivery, so its effects are as important as medical an midwifery factors. This study was aimed to evaluate the effects of massage on pain and Length of delivery. Methods: This quasi- experimental study was held on100 nulliparaous women who were admitted in social security hospital of Ardabil city for delivery from October to March of 2013. 50 women were located in the case group (Massage group) and 50 women in the control group (without massage group). The Massage group received Massage from the end of sacrum vertebral to Lumbar vertebral). This intervention was performed during contractions and in 4, 6, 8 and 10cm vertical dilatation for 30 minutes. Then Labor pain intensity at the end of the second stage, duration of active phase and the second stages of Labor in two groups were recorded. The data were analyzed by spss software ( 12 Version), chi square, t test and Mann Whitney tests.
