This paper deals with the following main aims contributing to the GEO framework as well as to existing studies using remote sensing to map and monitor urbanization systematically: • Maximizing the time period for monitoring the spatial effects of urbanization based on EO data to a span of almost 40 years (~1975–2011) • Mapping and monitoring systematically and consistently today’s four megacities in China • Measuring and comparing spatial patterns for derivation of new insights on the spatial effects of urbanizatio
