Today Particle Image Velocimetry, a technique that enables the quantitative visualization of instantaneous flow fields, has become widely spread and differentiated into many distinct applications ranging from micro flows to combustion and supersonic flows, both for research and industrial needs. This was made possible mainly by technological progress in video techniques, lasers and the development of sophisticated evaluation algorithms, having been started by a few researchers in the 1980s.
