This paper investigates the application of the optical correlation based Image Pattern Correlation Technique (IPCT) for high precision measurements of bird wings. Based on preliminary tests with a wing preparation, several options of using IPCT in combination with the natural plumage texture of birds are discussed, with respect to the measurement accuracy and their influence on the feather properties. Based on these results, a setup for measuring the shape of bird wings during free gliding flight using a projected pattern was derived. Presented are the final setup and the results of a free flight experiment using a trained barn owl
