The experimental accessibility of convective air flow is discussed concerning the aspects of large scale measurements, scaling of convective air flow and simultaneous measurement of instantaneous velocity and temperature fields. Measurements of convective air flow in a full scale aircraft cabin mock-up section, of mixed convection in a generic cell under high pressure and of Rayleigh-Bénard convection in a cubical cell are presented. In all three cases Particle Image Velocimetry is adapted to the specific needs of the measurement situation and applied as the measurement technique of choice.
