Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) may in the future prevent errors of the drivers. The question is in which situations (e.g. intersection with left turn and approaching vehicle) what kind of assistance is required. To answer this question, an in-depth accident analysis was conducted with 4258 accidents in the year 2002 from the Braunschweig area in Germany. In summary, about 70 % of all severe accidents could be prevented, given the required ADAS functionalities were existent and an adequate support is given to the driver. Overall, examining the causes of driver errors gives valuable information for the technical development
