The system model that underlies IEC 61508 is not always applicable to automotive systems. This paper describes the guidelines that are being written by MISRA for the safety analysis of programmable automotive systems. The guidelines give advice on Safety Management, System Modelling, Hazard Identification and Classification, Risk Assessment and safety validation, and are based on experience gained by a number of automotive manufacturers and component suppliers
