A method for the measurement of temperatures and densities in rarefied flow is the Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy which is applied to reentry simulation of Hermes, Saenger, and the Shuttle in wind tunnels. The strong nonequilibrium of rotational and vibrational temperature is typical of hypersonic wind tunnels becauseof the rapid expansion in Laval nozzle or free jets. LIF excitation spectra of nitric oxide (NO) were measured in a hot hypersonic free jet expansion in the vacuum wind tunnel at DLR Goettingen in a wide density range (10 up 11 - 10 up 16 molecules/cm3).
