For the design of an optimal high adaptive wall test section and the development of a testing technique, a three-step research plan was established by DLR and CAE under a cooperative program between SM-ES and NPU. The three steps are: 1. Reducing shock wave reflection 2. To find an optimal configuration for the adaptive wall test section. 3. To increase the testing Mach number to near sonic. This paper describes some preliminary work related to the second step. It also contains a general introduction, and a simple explanation of the theory, research facilities and instruments used by the two sides, a description of the models tested and the test results and analyses
