This paper concerns an investigation of a wing tip vortex of a modern transport aircraft in the transonic wind tunnel in Göttingen by means of the stereoscopic PIV and BOS method. Additionally to the velocity field perpendicular to the vortex line ca. 1/3 span behind the wing tip, the position and the density distribution of the vortex was determined in this area. The investigation of the density distribution was possible due to recent developments of the BOS postproccessing algorithms
