Chronic illness, and in particular neurodevelopmental disorders, are associated with an increased risk of mental health problems and social difficulties in children. Across the neurodevelopmental disorders, the presence of cognitive impairment, such as intellectual disability, is one factor which has been related to this increased risk. The overall aim of the present thesis was to extend our knowledge about the influence of chronic illness and intellectual function on mental health and social functioning in children.
