This thesis is a case study of the post-2020 climate negotiations of the European Union (EU), referred to as the 2030 negotiations. Recent research suggests that the financial crisis and lack of success of global climate negotiations has led to increasing division within the Member States, challenging the EU s ability to create strong climate commitments. The 2030 negotiations were initiated by the European Commission in January 2014, and were finalized when the Heads of Member States found agreement on the 2030 climate and energy package in the EU Council in October 2014.
