The aim of this study has been to paint a picture of how Norwegian learners of English as a foreign language respond to compliments when communicating in English, in comparison to a group of native American English speakers. The study is founded in the belief that Norwegians come off as more rude than other Western cultures and often fail to strengthen bonds of solidarity, which is the main function of a compliment. The thesis sets out to investigate whether or not Norwegian learners would comform to the pragmatic conventions of the culture in the target language, or if there are differences founded in pragmatic transfer.
