The prevalence of diabetes mellitus type II and gestational diabetes have increased in Norway. We will overview the possible causes of gestational diabetes and diabetes mellitus type II and the treatment for diabetes in pregnancy. Metformin was introduced for treating pregnant women with hyperglycemia in some countries following a landmark paper in 2008. This medication created a discussion among the doctors, because metformin crosses the placenta and may affect the fetus, and later on the child. Insulin was earlier the only medication given to pregnant women, but that has changed. Therefore metformin treatment is discussed regarding safety in pregnant women.
