In this thesis I have studied the process of the debate on the selective education system in Northern Ireland, from 2000 to 2011. Since it was introduced in 1947, the education system in Northern Ireland had been based on academic selection. This meant that the transfer from primary to post-primary schools, was based on the pupils' performance in the 11-plus, which was an examination in numeracy and literacy. Those who performed well were selected to go to Grammar schools, and those who did not, went to Secondary schools. In the years following the signing of the Belfast Agreement in 1998, academic selection was one of the most debated issues on the political agenda in Northern Ireland.
