Eutrophication is threatening freshwater and coastal marine ecosystem all over the world. Excessive nutrient supply leads to algal blooms that may develop into a toxic cyanobacteria bloom, and so reduce the utility and aesthetic value of water. Phosphorus is assumed to be the limiting nutrient for algal growth in freshwater systems and thus much restoration has focused on reducing phosphorus supply in the water ecosystems (bodies). Lake Årungen is a shallow lake, situated 33 m above sea level in SE Norway. It has been eutrophic since the 1950s, due to high runoff of nutrients from surrounding agriculture area and sewage systems.
