In most cases, the reading of John’s gospel in Tanzania has been done by biblical scholars in academic contexts. This has, to a great extent, undermined the contributions of lay people from reading the gospel in their own context and experiences of life, and created a gap between lay people in parishes and theologians in the academy. Moreover, such reading has concealed the role of biblical texts towards dealing with current social problems surrounding stigmatized people, such as HIV/AIDS-related stigmatization, as seen by their own perspective.
