Rationale Mother to child transmission of HIV is the predominant manner in which children acquire HIV. UNAIDS estimates 1800 HIV infected infants continue to be born every day in the developing world. In the absence of any interventions, the rate of transmission from mother to child is about 25-35 %. Nonetheless, in developed countries the impact of preventive interventions show a marked reduction in the number of children born infected with HIV. Botswana being one of the countries with the highest HIV prevalence among pregnant women initiated and implemented PMTCT strategies in 1999.
