Palliative therapies in esophageal cancer Esophageal cancer is a lethal malignancy, with a rising incidence worldwide, but still a rare disease in Norway (0,7 % of all newly diagnosed cancers in Norway). Most of the patients presents with advanced disease, meaning that they can not be operated, and will at some point require palliation. The mortality rates have improved over the last decades, but remains low (only 10 % overall 5 years survival in Europe). Palliation is often required for symptoms, such as dysphagia, gastrointestinal bleeding, aspiration caused by tracheoesophageal fistula, nausea and emesis secondary to gastric outlet obstruction, and malnutrition.
