This master thesis examines dress and ethnicity among the kalasha people, a small indigenous community in northwestern Pakistan. It examines how clothing, as material culture, express symbolic meaning. More specifically, it examines how creation of meaning is associated with a particular type of dress, and how the meaning generated is linked to ethnicity and ethnic identity. Kalasha women´s dress distinguish, and marks the kalasha community from the nearby muslim community. The important dress contains great social and cultural value, and its use is largely a symbolic act. This master thesis is based on a conducted fieldwork in the Kalasha Valleys, as a participant at the annual Joshi Festival may 2013
