Thallium-201 myocardial imaging is of value in the early detection and evaluation of patients with suspected acute infarction. The extent of a thallium defect in an initial myocardial image may have important prognostic value. Tomographic imaging techniques hold promise for increased diagnostic sensitivity and more accurate quantitation of both infarcted and residual viable myocardium.
