Background: Diabetes mellitus is a group of chronic metabolic diseases characterized by high concentration of glucose in the blood. The most common form of diabetes among children and adolescents is type 1 diabetes (T1D). This is the second most common chronic disease acquired in childhood and adolescence, and the incidence is increasing globally. The disease is associated with autoimmunity and complications causing high morbidity and mortality. With the globalization, the need of international consensus is increasing in medicine. International and national guidelines are established for diagnostics, treatment and follow up of children with diabetes to optimize treatment and reduce complications.
