Reporting Africa : a comparative study of five Norwegian newspapers

This thesis is about the coverage of Africa in the Norwegian print media. It draws on a case study of five Norwegian newspapers, Stavanger Aftenblad, Aftenposten, Dagsavisen, Dagbladet and Klassekampen and uses as its main source of empirical data qualitative interviews and a quantitative content analysis. The qualitative interviews were carried out with five foreign affair journalists from each of the papers in the case study, where the main issues addressed included newsroom practices, framing and the effect of the market forces. In addition I conducted a quantitative content analysis of news articles related to Africa that featured in the newspapers in a period of four months. In the analysis of this empirical data I used news values, agenda setting and framing as my theoretical perspectives
