Influence and marginalisation : Norway's adaptation to US transformation efforts in NATO, 1998-2004

This thesis is about Norwegian security and defence policy between 1998 and 2004. The study deals with Norway's adaptation to military requirements set forth by the United States in NATO. A central feature in that respect was NATO's new strategic concept of April 1999, and the need for forces that could operate outside as well as inside the member states' national territories. To accomplish a refocused defence effort towards more out-of-area operations, American defence officials launched the Defence Capabilities Initiative (DCI).
