The purpose of this Briefing Paper is to review international legal and administrative developments relating to older people, specifically the establishment of the first Commissioner for Older People in Wales. The Welsh model: The question of establishing a statutory, independent Commissioner for Older People has been raised in a number of jurisdictions, notably Wales and Scotland. To date, it is only in Wales that such a body has been set up. The Commissioner for Older People (Wales) Act 2006 received Royal Assent on 25 July 2006, giving powers to the Welsh Assembly Government to establish the office of the Commissioner and to make regulations relating to the office\u27s tenure and powers
