In Australia, it is estimated that there were 474,600 primary carers for people because of disability or age in 2003 (Australian Bureau of Statistics [ABS], 2003). The issue is of particular importance given the growing number of Australians who have caring responsibilities because of the ageing of the population. This article is a summary of a Australian Institute of Family Studies report released in 2008 of a study which examined the many emotional, physical, relational and economic costs associated with caring.
