The lack of affordable housing in Australia can be devastating for people with low incomes, particularly those who depend on income support payments. Dr Cassandra Goldie says we can’t address affordability until we also admit that $35 a day is not enough to live on. According to the National Housing Supply Council, there is a shortfall of 250,000 affordable rental properties in Australia. However, the availability of affordable housing is only a part of the problem for the 47 per cent of low-income households which experience rental stress in the private market. The other main issue is the paucity of income support payments
