Pragmatic propositions emerge for shaping museums of the future

LEADING museum professionals around the world agree the art museum is relevant and important. But whether present models are still viable was just one of the difficult questions posed earlier this year to museum directors invited by the Aspen Institute, an education and policy studies organisation based in Washington, DC, to discuss their future. The Aspen forum in March brought together a diverse group of forward-thinking colleagues who are pioneering new approaches to museum practice. The directors of 11 leading US museums, including Richard Armstrong from the Guggenheim in New York and Timothy Potts from the J. Paul Getty Museum, joined seven thought-leaders from other fields, including architecture, science, marketing and communications, technology, business and the performing arts. Two of these provocateurs were artists. Three participants -- from France, South Korea and Australia -- brought very different contexts and funding environments to the discussion.
