Improving school education in Australia has been a topic of public discussion for some time. In the period 1982-2012 there was roughly one state or national inquiry every year into the teaching profession in Australia.[1] These discussion continue today. In New South Wales requirements (to come into effect next year) require aspiring teachers to score a minimum of Band 5, or 80 per cent, in at least three of their High School Certificate (HSC) subjects, including English.[2] The theory is that restricting enrolment to those with higher ATARs will ensure that only the best and brightest will be able to become teachers.
