There is strong evidence to suggest that inducible displacements, migration and implant loosening are closely related to the initial mechanical environment of the implanted tibia. If this is true, then it should be possible to predict the likelihood of implant migration using patient-specific finite element models. Finite element models of the proximal implanted tibiae were analysed based on pre-operative quantitative computed tomography data of four patients entered into a radiographic migration study.
