Despite the criticisms, pure political independence for think tanks is neither achievable nor desirable. Instead they should be judged on the integrity of their work, writes Melissa Conley Tyler. . Think tanks are not always very popular in Australia. Readers of The Drum gave some vitriolic responses to a report on global think tanks. It appears that for many their mental image of a think tank is a public relations outfit set up to "spread misinformation and further the ideological interests of the ruling elite".
