It is proposed in this paper that in designing algorithmic composition systems it may be useful to consider the important characteristics of music from the listeners’ perspective, rather than the analysts. In doing so the fundamental dynamic nature of music, which is lost in transcription, becomes apparent. Initial explorations of dynamical systems are presented as a means of producing a sense of movement, and creating higher level structures
