Reviews a process developed at the Institute fur Biochemie des Bodens, Braunschweig-Volkenrode, W. Germany, for converting calcium-sulphite waste liquor, typically from pulping Picea abies, into a granular fertilizer after oxidative ammoniation. The product, known as N-Lignin, has given good responses in grain yield in container trials with summer rye and has at the same time diminished N losses by leaching, presumably as a result of an inhibition of nitrification.
