Impact of floods on the casuistry of zoonotic diseases and accidents caused by animal bites recorded in a General Hospital in the city of Iquitos, Loreto, Peru

En casos de inundaciones se presentan condiciones favorables para la reproducción de artrópodos vectores del dengue o fiebre amarilla, así como mamíferos roedores reservorios de leptospiras. Además, el hábitat de animales silvestres como los ofidios se ve afectado, produciendo un mayor contacto con las personas. Por ello, el objetivo del estudio fue determinar la asociación de casos de enfermedades zoonóticas y accidentes producidos por animales, registrados en el Hospital Regional de Loreto-Iquitos “Felipe Santiago Arriola Iglesias”, entre enero y junio de 2011 y 2012 fechas en las que se reportaron precipitaciones pluviales regulares e inundaciones, respectivamente. Se revisó la base de datos de la Oficina de Epidemiología del Hospital y se transfirieron a una base de datos. La frecuencia de presentación de enfermedades zoonóticas y accidentes por mordedura de ofidios fue contrastada mediante el cálculo del Odds Ratio. Se registró un total 7595 y 6917 en el período enero-julio de los años 2011 y 2012 respectivamente. Se encontró un riesgo de 2.08 (1.19-3.62) para los registros de la enfermedad de Paludismo por Plasmodium falciparum y de 0.096 (0.079-0.116) para la enfermedad de Dengue Clásico, cuando se considera al año 2012 (año de inundaciones) como factor de riesgo. Otras enfermedades como Leptospirosis y accidentes por ofidios no se encontraron asociadas a la época de lluvia extrema. Los resultados permiten valorar que el paludismo es una enfermedad que debe de tenerse en cuenta en casos de desastres naturales como son las inundaciones en esta región.Floods generate favorable conditions for the reproduction of arthropod vectors of dengue and yellow fever, as well as rodent mammals leptospira reservoirs. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the association of cases of zoonotic diseases and accidents produced by animals, registered in the Regional Hospital of LoretoIquitos “Felipe Santiago Arriola Iglesias”, between January - June 2011 and 2012, dates that reported regular rainfall and floods, respectively. After reviewing the records of the Bureau of Epidemiology of the Hospital, they were transferred to a database. The frequency of submission of zoonotic diseases and accidents by bite of ophidians was contrasted through the calculation of the Odds Ratio. There were a total 7595 and 6917 in the period January-July of the years 2011 and 2012 respectively. We found a risk of 2.08 (1.19-3.62 ) for the records of the disease of Plasmodium falciparum Malaria and 0,096 (0,079-0,116 ) for the Classic Dengue disease, when it comes to 2012 (year of floods) as a risk factor. Other diseases such as leptospirosis and accidents by ophidia were found not to be associated with the extreme rainy season. The results indicate that malaria is a disease that must be taken into account in case of natural disasters such as flooding in this region
