Impacto de la caries de la infancia temprana en la calidad de vida relacionada a la salud bucal en niños peruanos menores de 71 meses de edad

The aim of this study was to determine the impact and relationship of Early Childhood Caries (ECC) and Quality of Life Related to Oral Health (QLROH) of children treated at the Service of the National Institute of Infant Health. Lima Perú. Methodology: It is a cross-sectional study; a representative sample of 95 children under 71 months and their mothers were selected randomly. The perception of mothers of QLROH were collected through the questionnaire ECOHIS (Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale). ECC data were collected through a clinical examination by two previously calibrated examiners (kappa˃0.81) using ICDASII criteria. The relationship between ECC and QLROH was performed using Spearman correlation. Results: The median and interquartile deviation simple of ECOHIS was 20 ± 5 with respect to the impact on the family 7 ± 1, impact on the child 13 ± 3.5. In the correlation analysis between ECC-QLROH and a value of rho = 0.51 (95% CI: 0.34 to 0.64) was determined; the age of the mother and QLROH by scores of ECOHIS a value of rho = -0.22 (95% CI - 0.41 to -0.02) was determined; being self-image / social interaction and ECC dimension with a value of rho = 0.48 (95% CI: .31-.62) the highest coefficient. Children from families with low socioeconomic status, are the most affected by caries. Conclusions: The ECC has a negative impact on QLROH in children and their families; the dimensions: Self Image / social interaction and anguish of the parents were the most affected; older mothers reported less impact; children belonging to families of low socioeconomic status reported greater impact associated with poorer quality of life 0.344 to 0.646 0.309 to 0.622) -0406 to -0022).El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar el impacto y relación de la caries de la infancia temprana (CIT) y calidad de vida relacionada a salud bucal (CVRSB) de los niños, atendidos en el servicio de atención del infante del Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño, Lima-Perú. Metodología. Estudio transversal y observacional; una muestra representativa de 95 niños menores de 71 meses y sus madres fueron seleccionados aleatoriamente. La percepción de las madres de la CVRSB fue recogida a través del cuestionario ECOHIS (Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale). Los datos de CIT fueron recolectados a través de un examen clínico por dos examinadores previamente calibrados (kappa˃0.81) usando los criterios ICDASII. La relación entre CIT y CVRSB se realizó con la correlación de Spearman. Resultados. La mediana y desviación intercuartil de la muestra del ECOHIS fue de 20±5, con respecto al impacto a la familia 7±1, impacto en el niño 13.±3.5. En el análisis de correlación entre CVRSB y CIT se determinó un valor de rho=0.51 (IC 95%: 0.34 a 0.64); la edad de la madre y CVRSB mediante los puntajes del ECOHIS se determinó un valor de rho=-0.22 (IC 95%:-0.41 a -0.02); siendo la dimensión Autoimagen/interacción social y CIT con un valor de rho=0.48 (IC 95%:0.31 a 0.62) el de mayor coeficiente. Los niños pertenecientes a familias de nivel socioeconómico bajo son los más afectados con caries. Conclusiones. La caries de la infancia temprana genera un impacto negativo en la calidad de vida relacionada a salud bucal en los niños y en sus familias, siendo las dimensiones: Autoimagen/ interacción social y la angustia de los padres los más afectados; las madres de mayor edad declararon menor impacto; los niños pertenecientes a las familias de nivel socioeconómico bajo reportaron mayor impacto relacionado con una peor calidad de vida
