Niveles Séricos de Hormona de Crecimiento e IGF-I, y Ejercicio Físico Submáximo en Gran Altura y a Nivel del Mar

OBJETIVE: To assess serum growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) levels among high altitudes (HA) and sea level (SL) natives, and its variations with exercise. METHODS: 50 young men from Cerro de Pasco (4,340 m) and 40 individuals from Lima (150 m) were evaluated. Each subgroup underwent differentintensity exercise. Pre- and post-exercise hematocrit, hemoglobin, glucose, GH, IGF-I, insulin and glucagon levels were recorded. RESULTS: Baseline GH levels at SL showed no significant differences with those at HA (0,79 ng/mL vs. 0,98 ng/mL; p >0,05), whereas baseline IGF-I levels were higher at SL (299,38 ng/mL vs. 63,71 ng/mL; p <0,01). Among SL natives, there were a significant correlation between baseline GH and IGF-I (r = 0,44) levels. Submaximal exercise results in a significant rise of GH (0,79 to 5,54 ng/mL [r = 0,51] and 0,98 to 8,47 ng/mL [r = 0,51] at HA and SL, respectively) levels. On the other hand, exercise exert no significant variations on insulin, IGF1, glucagon or glucose levels. CONCLUSION: Submaximal exercise at HA and SL could result in high fasting GH levels observed in young adults, but it would not increase IGF-I and glucose levels.OBJETIVO: Estudiar los niveles de hormona de crecimiento (GH) y de factor de crecimiento tipo insulina I (IGF-I) en gran altura y a nivel del mar (NM), así como sus variaciones con el esfuerzo físico (EF). MÉTODOS: Se evaluó 50 soldados jóvenes de Cerro de Pasco (4340 nsmn) y 40 de Lima (150 msnm). Cada grupo fue sometido a EF diferente (caminata de 1,5; 3; 4,5 y 6 km. en altura y de 2; 4 y 6 km. a NM). Se determinó glucosa, GH, IGF-I, insulina y glucagón pre y post-EF. RESULTADOS: No hubo diferencias significativas entre los niveles basales de GH obtenidos a NM y en altura (0,79 ng/mL contra 0,98 ng/niL,p>0,05). En cambio, fueron mayores los niveles de IGF1 obtenidos a NM (299,38 ng/mL contra 63,71 ng/mL, p <0,01). Sólo a NM se obtuvo una correlación significativa entre los niveles basales de GH e IGF-I (r = 0,44). Los niveles de GH aumentaron significativamente con el EF submáximo (0,79 a 5,54 ng/mL [r = 0,51] y 0,98 a 8,47 ng/mL [r = 0,51] en altura y a NM, respectivamente). No se observó variación significativa en los otros parámetros. CONCLUSION: El EF submáximo, en gran altura y NM, sería el responsable de los altos niveles de GH observados en ayuno en el varón joven pero no favorecería mayores niveles de IGF-1 y glucosa
