La familia Symplocaceae es reconocida en el Perú con un género, Symplocos, y 26 especies, todas ellas leñosas (Ståhl, 1993). En este trabajo reconocemos 14 especies endémicas, de las cuales, casi la mitad es conocida de una localidad. La mayoría de las especies endémicas ocupan las regiones Bosques Pluviales Montanos y Bosques Muy Húmedos Montanos, entre los 2250 y 3700 m de altitud. Seis especies endémicas se encuentran representadas dentro del Sistema Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas por el Estado
