Photovoltaic power converter management in unbalanced low voltage networks with ancillary services support

La proliferación de prosumidores fotovoltaicos (PV) residenciales conlleva impactos perjudiciales en el funcionamiento de la red de distribución de bajo voltaje (LV), como el flujo de potencia inverso, las fluctuaciones de voltaje y los desequilibrios de voltaje. Esto se debe al hecho de que las estrategias para los inversores fotovoltaicos generalmente están diseñadas para obtener la máxima energía de los paneles. El enfoque más reciente de estos problemas implica nuevas soluciones basadas en inversores. Este documento propone una novedosa estrategia de control integral para los convertidores electrónicos de potencia asociados con las instalaciones fotovoltaicas para mejorar el rendimiento operativo de una red de distribución de LV de cuatro cables. Los objetivos son tratar de equilibrar las corrientes demandadas por los consumidores y compensar la potencia reactiva demandada por ellos a expensas de la capacidad restante de los convertidores. La estrategia se implementa en cada instalación del consumidor, constituyendo un control descentralizado o distribuido y permitiendo su implementación práctica basada en mediciones locales. Los algoritmos se probaron, en un horizonte de simulación anual, en una red de LV portuguesa típica para verificar el impacto de la alta integración de las fuentes de energía renovable en la red y la efectividad y aplicabilidad del enfoque propuesto.The proliferation of residential photovoltaic (PV) prosumers leads to detrimental impacts on the low-voltage (LV) distribution network operation such as reverse power flow, voltage fluctuations and voltage imbalances. This is due to the fact that the strategies for the PV inverters are usually designed to obtain the maximum energy from the panels. The most recent approach to these issues involves new inverter-based solutions. This paper proposes a novel comprehensive control strategy for the power electronic converters associated with PV installations to improve the operational performance of a four-wire LV distribution network. The objectives are to try to balance the currents demanded by consumers and to compensate the reactive power demanded by them at the expense of the remaining converters’ capacity. The strategy is implemented in each consumer installation, constituting a decentralized or distributed control and allowing its practical implementation based on local measurements. The algorithms were tested, in a yearly simulation horizon, on a typical Portuguese LV network to verify the impact of the high integration of the renewable energy sources in the network and the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed approach.• Junta de Extremadura (España).
