Original Hokusai watercolors. RISD Special Collections Flat Folio portfolio box. An album (30 x 17 cm) of fourteen hand-painted double-paged watercolors. This volume has a Gorham date stamp of Oct.16, 1871 inside front and back covers. Light blue covers, stab-bound with thread missing/removed. [numbered label on cover:] 612 Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese printmaker, painter, 1760-1849) is noted for Edo period works of ukiyo-e (\u27pictures of the floating world\u27) in painting and printmaking. He had a long career of over 70 years and is thought to have created over 30,000 drawings and illustrations for 500 books under multiple names typically associated with shifts in production and style. Since the late 19th century, his work has had a significant impact on Western artists, including Gauguin and van Gogh.
