Throughout history, military alliances have proved pivotal in shaping international politics and determining the outcome of conflicts. The complexities behind alliances in the 20th and 21st centuries have brought a new dynamic to international conflict resolution. With the resurgence of China and Russia as contenders on the world stage, the focus for organizations such as NATO have shifted from counterterroism to preparing to fight a near peer adversary.
