Associating environmental cues with their outcomes occurs through multiple strategies relying on different neural substrates. Unpredicted reward evokes dopamine release, which also develops to predictive cues, suggesting that predictive dopamine signals arise only after extensive pairings of cues with appetitive outcomes.
