Effect of oxygen on the recovery, recrystallization and grain growth of high-purity silver

The absorption of oxygen favors the development of either {111} or {100} oriented grains in the poly-crystalline aggregate instead of the {110} type orientation favored in vacuum annealing of pure silver. Upon rolling the presence of oxygen stabilized end orientation different than the {110} end orientation, which is regarded the most stable orientation for low stacking fault energy f.c.c. metals. The presence of oxygen in the matrix enhances recovery but retards grain growth during isothermal anneals. On the basis of the appearances of the hardness versus annealing time curves, the activation energy for recovery and recrystallization was postulated to be increasing as annealing proceeds to completion
