A ligand that coordinates with lanthanide metal ions, 4-(trifluoromethyl)-dibenzamide-benzoguanamine (4TFMDBBG) was synthesized in 61.2% yield. Whencomplexed with europium and terbium, red and green luminescence, respectively, wasobserved under UV light. Crystals of the ligand were isolated and its crystal structurewas determined. Further characterization by NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopy and massspectrometrywere performed. Crystals of a metal complex of a side product were alsoisolated and its crystal structure was determined
