Cactaceae are one of the major floristic components of the New World’s arid as well as seasonally moist tropical regions and at the same time one of the most popular plant families in horticulture. The taxonomic units (tribes, genera) and species limits in the Cactaceae have been difficult to define due to intergrading vegetative characters, pheno-typic plasticity and the largely uniform flower morphology. Molecular phylogenetic studies so far yielded largely unresolved trees, so relationships within Cactaceae remain in-sufficiently understood.
