Integrated survey techniques for the study and the restoration of cultural heritage: some case studies in Enna

The laser scanning technique and its experimentation in Architecture, though not very recent, is constantly improving. Its use in the field of survey and architectural restoration, is without a doubt facilitated by the versatility and effectiveness of this instrumentation, not only in terms of acquisition of the metric data, but also with regard to the representation of architectural objects and their georeferencing (WebShare application). In the field of restoration, featuring a rich variety of methodological and operational opportunities, survey plays a key role. The constant development of techniques for data collection, Graphics processing, modeling and rendering, provides an essential support for the study of the monuments, as well as for the evaluation and validation of project choices. In a time when we need both to go fast (limiting the impact of activities that are generally very-time consuming), and to be accurate in the restitution of architectural object of complex geometry, laser scanning can be very useful to support and complete traditional techniques. Founded on the principle that the restoration should be considered as an unique project, a skilled synthesis of different stages, this paper intends to document an experience carried out on the main monuments of the city of Enna, in which the traditional survey technique for restoration has been completed by an experiment performed by a laser scanner combined with a new software for the point clouds processing
