The homogeneous combination of inorganic and organic moieties in a single-phase material provides unique possibilities to tailor the mechanical, chemical, and optical properties with respect to textile applications. The modification of fabric surface using sol–gel technology has been reported to be an encouraging approach, which could deposit novel materials such as organic–inorganic hybrids from a solution on fabric surface at or near room temperature. In this way protection of textiles against wear or destruction and the creation of new advantageous functions can be realised. This article discusses results from applying modified silica nanosols to the functionalisation of cotton textile fabric to improve flame retardant and wear resistanc...
