We study—experimentally,theoretically, and numerically—nonlinear excitations in lattices ofmagnetswithlong-rangeinteractions. We examinebreather solutions, whichare spatially localized and periodicin time, in a chain with algebraically-decaying interactions.Itwas established two decades ago(Flach1998Phys. Rev.E58R4116)that lattices with long-range interactions can have breather solutions inwhich the spatial decay ofthe tailshas a crossover from exponential to algebraic decay.Inthis article, werevisitthis problem inthe setting ofa chain of repelling magnets with a massdefect and verify, bothnumerically and experimentally, theexistence of breatherswith such a crossover.ISSN:1367-263
