The article discusses recent changes wthin the archival work with a specific reference to the archives of 20th century music. It deals with the types of research, dissemination of knowledge and organisation of scholars' groups around sources and materials preserved in the European archives. The text is a further elaboration of a paper delivered at the symposium "Das digitale Archiv des Internationalen Musikinstituts Darmstadt" (Darmstadt, 9th November 2017)
