Methane seeps in the Black Sea: Environment-forming and ecological role

This monograph presents new research materials on study of cold methane seeps in the Black Sea as a hemoecological factor. Geographical distribution and the table of coordinates of 3000 seeps in the Black Sea are given. A model for gas exchange of bubbles in the water environment is proposed and methane emission from gas seeps to the water column and atmosphere is assessed. Modern views on the impact of cold seeps on the hydrochemical characteristics of the marine environment, the vertical water exchange, methanotrophic chemosynthesis and trophic structure of water are stated. We describe a new form of life in the anoxic water column of the Black Sea. Estimates are given of potential environmental hazards due to methane discharge from the bottom of the Black Sea, and outlook for the use of cold seeps as a search and resource factors are discussed.
