The present article studies sixteenth- and seventeenth-century arrangements of vocal polyphonic works for the lute and the vihuela. Known as "intabulations", such arrangements were based on both sacred and secular vocal works. After discussing the historical background of intabulations, attention is given to the methods and techniques employed by lute and vihuela players in the arrangement process from the original vocals.
